A CO₂ Recovery System is a process system that captures the carbon dioxide produced during fermentation, purifies it, liquefies it, and stores it for reuse in the brewery or distillery. It helps reduce CO₂ purchase costs, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and ensures a stable CO₂ supply. The main components includes de-foaming, water washing, gas storage, compression, freeze-drying, adsorption drying, refrigeration, storage tank, and vaporization.
The working process of CO2 recovery system:
The CO2 source is from fermentation gas generated in brewery fermentation tanks. The incoming gas first enters a foam separator to capture and remove any entrained foam. Next, the gas passes through a scrubbing tower, where water washing removes the vast majority of organic impurities and odors. The scrubbing tower utilizes advanced packing materials and specialized spray nozzles to ensure superior scrubbing performance. A gas buffer tank serves to stabilize the flow for the downstream processing equipment. The washed gas then enters the compression system, which features a dedicated three-stage CO2 compressor unit that boosts the gas pressure to 1.5–1.8 MPa. A refrigerated dryer serves as the primary drying stage, utilizing low-temperature dehumidification to achieve an outlet gas temperature of 2–4°C; the inclusion of this unit enhances the efficiency of the subsequent dryer. The chilled, dried gas then passes through an activated carbon adsorber to further remove organic impurities and odors. Subsequently, the gas undergoes deep drying; the system is PLC-controlled and capable of achieving an atmospheric dew point below -60°C. The CO2 liquefaction system consists of a CO2 evaporative condenser and an R22 condensing unit. The deeply dried CO2 gas is liquefied at low temperature (-18°C) within the CO2 evaporative condenser; gaseous impurities—such as N2O2—are purged as non-condensable gases during the liquefaction and impurity-removal process, thereby increasing the CO2 purity. The liquefied CO2 is stored in a cryogenic storage tank, which can be insulated with cost-effective polyurethane. The storage tank system is highly reliable and incorporates subsystems for automatic operation, safety venting, and liquid level monitoring.
