Building a distillery is never just about choosing brewing equipment—it's about creating the most efficient production process within the available space. For this 2000L whisky distillery project in the UK, one of the biggest challenges was the limited building height and restricted floor area.
To overcome these constraints, Tiantai designed a compact, highly automated brewhouse and fermentation system, maximizing production efficiency while minimizing the equipment footprint.
Compact Brewhouse for Low-Height Buildings
The brewhouse was specifically engineered for a distillery with limited ceiling height. By optimizing the vessel arrangement and platform structure, the entire brewing system fits comfortably into the available space while maintaining easy access for operation and maintenance.
The brewhouse combination is 2000L Mash Lauter Tun (MLT) and 2500L Hot Liquor Tank (HLT),
its compact configuration provides an efficient workflow without compromising brewing performance.
Tube Chain Conveyor - Save Space, Improve Efficiency
Instead of using a traditional flexible auger, this project utilizes a tube chain conveyor, allowing flexible routing through tight spaces while significantly reducing the required installation area. As you know, the flexible auger needs certain installation angle and space.
The pipe chain conveyor also provides several advantages:
- Space-saving installation
- Flexible conveying paths and longer distance
- Low dust generation
- Gentle malt handling with minimal grain damage
- Ideal for breweries and distilleries with limited space
Square Layout for fermentation tanks to optimize floor space
To make the best use of the available production area, the four fermentation tanks are arranged in a square layout, creating a compact fermentation cellar while leaving sufficient space for operation and maintenance. This layout significantly reduces the overall footprint compared with traditional linear installations.
The basic configurations of fermenters includes:
- Single-wall construction
- Cooling jacket for precise fermentation temperature control
- Hygienic stainless steel design
- Easy cleaning and maintenance
For whisky distillery, the fermentation temperature needed at 25℃ - 30℃, so a jacketed fermentation tank without insulation is enough.
Control Panel for fermentation tanks
The fermentation system is equipped with a centralized valve panel, allowing operators to conveniently manage:
- CIP cleaning circuits
- Fermented wash transfer to distiller
- The transfer pump with empty level switch to avoid dry running
The centralized design simplifies pipework, improves hygiene, and enhances operational efficiency.
Intelligent Automation with PLC & Pneumatic Valves
The brewhouse is fully controlled by a PLC automation system combined with pneumatic valves, providing reliable and repeatable brewing operations.
The basic brewhouse automation includes:
- Automatic water mixing
- Automatic wort cooling
- Pneumatic valve control
- Automated brewing sequence management
Operators can monitor and control the entire brewing process through HMI, reducing manual intervention while ensuring consistent product quality.
Smarter Material Handling
The malt hopper is equipped with load cells, enabling automatic control of the conveying system. Material transfer starts and stops automatically according to the preset weight, ensuring accurate malt dosing and reducing labor requirements.
In addition, all transfer pumps are equipped with empty level switch. When no liquid is detected, the pumps automatically stop, preventing damage caused by dry operation, thus extending equipment service life.
