Why my bright beer tank temperature can’t be cooled down

A Bright Tank is a dish-bottomed pressure-rated temperature-controlled tank used to hold beer in preparation for packaging. At this stage, the beer should be cooled by glycol and maintain the temperature at certain degree. Recently, one customer mentioned their bright tank can’t cool temperature down to 3℃ in few hours, what is the reason?
In a brewery, it is normal to meet such situation of temperature can’t be cooled down, either bright beer tank or fermentation tank. The main reason is from improper operation. In summary, there basically have 3 reasons:
1. The fermentation tank or bright tank inner shell is freezing
If the tanks inner is freezing, there will not have heat exchanging between beer and cold medium, so the temperature will not be cooled down, on the contrary, the ice will become thicker and thicker.
There have several reasons can result in bright tank inner is freezing, for example temperature control failure, solenoid valves wrong, over fast glycol flow speed. If all the instrument works well, the main reason normally is with faster cooling speed at initial, after long time running, ice layer is shaped, finally it will influence the cooling efficiency.
2. The beer level inside of tank not cover the glycol jacket completely
The glycol will flow through the jacket of fermentation tank or bright tank, in order to finish the cooling progress. If there not have enough beer over to glycol jacket, thus without enough heat exchange area between glycol jacket and beer, finally no convection and influence cooling efficiency.
3. The glycol flow is not enough
Without enough glycol flow, there will not have enough cold energy to make heat exchange with beer, so it also can influence the bright tank cooling efficiency. It is critical important to have a proper operation in a brewery.
