As a brewery equipment manufacturer, we have met many clients whole plan to purchase beer brewery equipment with a little bigger capacity than they really need at beginning of business. They may have plan to brew half batch with their beer brewing equipment. So is it possible?

In theory, it is available to brew half batch.
But the main factor we need to consider is the thickness of spent grain.
As we know, when the spent grain bed at 30~40cm is best range for wort lautering. In actual brewing, the thickness at about 25~45cm is also acceptable, our brewhouse also designed based on this principle.

For example, our standard 1000 brewhouse (mash/lauter tun) with 1460mm diameter, the suggested malt capacity being used every time at about 166~298KG. If brewing 500L beer with the 1000L brewery equipment, the malt capacity should be considered. If using 166kg malt when brewing 500L, means the ratio of malt to water at about 1:2, means higher plato beer would works. But if your beer recipe for 500L is less than 166kg, you may would get a thin grain bed and may need longer time before getting clear wort.
